If you are a PHP developer, you will definitely want to check out what Dev-PHP has to offer. It is a full-featured Integrated Development Environment designed specifically for the PHP programming language. Those who have grown accustomed to vim and Notepad for PHP development will immediately notice that Dev-PHP has syntax highlighting, which is super helpful when coding in any programming language.
Cool PHP-Related Features
Syntax highlighting is great, but Dev-PHP has so much more. It offers a left pane with quick access to a file manager, help documentation, sample code, and common code blocks so that you won't have to look syntax up if you switch between Perl and PHP—just double-click an example, and bam!—the code appears in your editing window.
The right pane allows tabbed editing of multiple files (great for editing included files) as well as a browser preview panel. Programmers aren't usually the best at designing user-friendly interfaces, but the interface is intuitive and easy to figure out. Obviously these programmers knew what PHP programmers would need quick access to, and they included it.
What We'd Change
As far as we know, the IDE includes the option to have a local PHP interpreter evaluate the code, but that usually doesn't do much good, especially if a database is involved, (and it usually is). This is not a very useful feature, at least to us, but it seems that an FTP manager or automatic uploader would be handy. If this feature is included, we couldn't find it—please drop us a line if we missed something. Oh, and one last thing: this project should not be judged by its website, which could really use some design help!
